Weaving the Pieces Together with Janna Maria
Weaving is one of the oldest forms of art making. It helps people improve their gross & fine motor skills. Hand weaving can be learned easily and practiced by people with physical disability, hearing disability and learning disability. It helps to reduce anxiety and improve self esteem, and learning the supportive group setting enhances belonging. In Janna’s sessions, participants learn step by step how to create a small finished weaving: preparing the looms, choosing the colours of hand-dyed yarn, and then creating the weaving that expresses themselves and their emotions. Throughout the process, conversations are lively and community is built.
Janna Maria is an artist and entrepreneur based on the Sunshine Coast of British Columbia. Janna first learned how to dye textiles and weave tapestry in 2008 during two years at Capilano University's Textile Art diploma program. In 2014 she began weaving tapestry as her primary artistic medium when she received her first Mirrix Loom and hasn't looked back. Janna has been offering textile workshops for over a decade, including an invitation in 2011 to Aurora College (Northwest Territories) to teach her self-designed five-week textile art program
