Hospice in Community

Sunshine Coast Hospice can support you or your loved one in the final days or weeks of life, whether at home, in the hospital, at Silverstone Care Centre or in a long-term care facility. If you live between Langdale and Earl’s Cove, we are here for you.

Our compassionate Hospice volunteers are trained to support the emotional, psychological, spiritual, practical and social needs of a person dying at home and their family. Our services are funded through community donations and grants, and are free of charge for recipients.

Vigil

The vigil program allows Hospice volunteers to sit peacefully by the bedside of people so they are not alone in the last days of life. Volunteers create a calming and comforting presence for the dying person, and their family and friends, and they are trained to alert the medical staff of any changes or concerns.

Respite

When Hospice volunteers provide vigil or visits, it permits families to get some sleep, enjoy a meal, and take a break. It also provides caregivers with much-needed relief and peace of mind.

Companionship

Our volunteers are trained to listen actively and compassionately, without judgement, to support you and your family in difficult times.

Threshold Choir

Some Hospice volunteers are also members of the Sunshine Coast Threshold Choir. When they are invited to the bedside, between two and four singers will sing songs selected to communicate ease, comfort and presence.

What is Hospice care?

Hospice is a special type of care, so it is not tied to a place. It can be offered at home, in a care facility or hospital, or in a separate hospice suite. It primarily focuses on comfort and dignity of a person with a serious illness who is approaching death. It especially seeks to honour the patient’s values and wishes for end-of-life care, and how they envision their passing.

Your wishes for care

You can discuss your wishes for end-of-life care in advance with your loved ones and family doctor through the development of a Green Sleeve Advance Care Plan, a community program offered through Sunshine Coast Hospice.
